It was then that benchrest shooting was included in the program of the revived Olympic Games. At the first competitions about 400 live pigeons were used as targets and for reasons of humanity this discipline was abandoned in 1904.

Before World War II from 1928 to 1936 and in the post-war year of 1948 there was no competition in this discipline due to lack of funds. At the next Olympics, held in 1952, the individual competition resumed. Since 1996, the women's and men's competitions have been held separately.

The exercise starts at the command of the athlete performing it, and the delay in throwing the skeet can be up to three seconds.
  • Trench Stand (Gangway). The skeet is thrown forward or sideways, the directions are changed randomly by a special program. This significantly complicates the shooter's task.
  • Trench Stand (Double Trap). The exercise is performed in the same way as the previous one, the difference is that the skeets are thrown out of the machine two at a time. To hit them the shots are made in duplicate. Since 2004 in this discipline, the rules provide for a delay of up to one second for the ejection of the target.
